- Withdraw som and keep the remote-leg US-dollar reserve separate from daily cash.
- Download 2GIS, Maps.me and offline translation; test the SIM or eSIM.
- Align the next transfer, fuel and overnight plan with the driver before leaving the city.

On the remote route
Do not depend on signal or improvisation
- Carry water, snacks, power and the documents needed for each remote leg.
- Stop ascending and tell your travel partner or driver when altitude symptoms appear.
- Use a fitted riding helmet and board a Kel-Suu boat only with a correctly sized life jacket and safe weather.

Entry, registration and identification

The dated entry figures on this page are deliberately limited to Dutch passport holders.

Passport validity: at least 6 months on arrival, based on the checked Dutch guidance.
Visa-free stay: up to 30 calendar days within every 60-day period.
The official registration list currently gives Dutch nationals a 60-day exemption; this 14-day route falls within it, but reconfirm before travel.
Carry your passport and check the official entry rules again immediately before departure. Other nationalities must use their own official guidance.

Altitude, symptoms and medical preparation

Song-Kul and Kel-Suu make acclimatization a booking decision, not an optional note for the road.

Avoid travelling directly from low elevation to a sleeping altitude of 2,750 m or higher in one day.
Prefer 2–3 acclimatization nights around 2,450–2,750 m first, or visit high ground by day and sleep lower.
Do not ascend with headache, nausea, dizziness or unusual fatigue. Confusion, uncoordinated walking, severe drowsiness or breathlessness at rest require immediate descent and urgent help.
Arrange a vaccination and medication consultation before travel. Keep medicines in original packaging and check whether a certificate is required.

Kel-Suu access, permits and remote roads

Our permit experience is historical; the current Kel-Suu zone, process and road access must come from your operator and official guidance.

On our August 2025 trip a border-zone permit was required. Our operator arranged it with an observed 2–3-day lead time.
The official permit catalogue confirms a border-zone system and lists up to 6 business days for processing, but it does not itself confirm current Kel-Suu coverage or fees.
On every departure day reconfirm the road, riverbed, mountain-pass and weather situation; also check working seat belts and sufficient fuel.
Share the route and expected arrival time, and store operator, insurer and emergency numbers offline.
Do not photograph or film military sites, police stations or border posts; the same restriction applies to drones.

Money, maps, power and connectivity

Cities can support cards and ATMs; remote legs need a tested cash and offline fallback.

Use Kyrgyz som for normal payments and carry enough KGS for remote legs; do not assume card acceptance or an ATM outside the cities.
US$300–500 in clean US-dollar notes per travelling party is Musab's August 2025 planning buffer, excluding prepaid costs—not an official requirement.
Withdraw cash before leaving Bishkek or Karakol, test the SIM or eSIM, and confirm current fees and coverage on arrival.
Download 2GIS, Maps.me and offline translation, and carry enough power and local storage for days without signal or cloud backup.

Insurance and activity safety

Generic travel insurance is not enough unless its wording matches the actual route and activities.

Confirm hospital care, repatriation, high-altitude activities, horse riding and evacuation from remote areas in the policy wording.
For horse riding, use a reputable provider, fitted helmet, safety briefing and an experienced guide or handler when needed.
For Kel-Suu boats, only board with a correctly sized life jacket and safe weather.
